Want

Surprisingly I don't have that much craving on food compared to the last holiday. I mean sure I ate some durian and rambutans but I remembered I gobbled up just too much last year. And as for food, hmm, there's nothing much that I couldn't eat back in Qtar,. I mean Kak Zah made excellent nasi dagang. And she cooked it with love and all. So comapred to the ne I bought here the other day, cit jauh panggang dari apilah. And Kak yati made roll-your-eyes nasi kerabu. Unless of course one of you guys yang masaklah. Yum yum. Yang tu gua tak tolak.

Oh but still the satay here is way better.Nak nak satay muar yang kecik manis. And I still go for kerang rebus, kerang bakar, kupang, lala, siput sedut masak lemak cili api and all that. ABC and cendol.

What I want coming back home is to get some books. Particularly Agama Islam reference book for the kids. I just cannot find it anywhere. There are activity books of course but there are only questions in them, no notes whatsoever. I need some notes, text book like. You know to guide me to teach them. Sure I can look up for notes and set soem questions but its just too much work and I err not sure whether I would be good enough. AT least a text book can be my guideline while I use other resources as well.

Can you suggest me what to buy and where. If any of you have standard 1 to 5 text books, and are not using them, I would love to purchase them. Kalau ada sila email hudishh@gmail.com. preferbally before Thursday because after that I am going to KL and thus no internet access.

AM

I am in my most lepak mode ever in Muar. Apart that I have to drive everywhere for my dad, which is really no different from what I have been doing all these while anyway. But so far no cooking at all for me. Yalah saya sekarang duduk rumah bujang. Tak kuasa baru nak start beli barang mentah. The kids played PS2 nearly all day long and I watched tv to my heart content.

We went to PD the other day tapi unfortunately, I ran out of camera battery and I also realised that I didn't bring my charger. THE HORRORS!!! So my 3d2n stay in PD has virtually no photos. Tapi adalah sikit2 ambik gambar.

The trip was really good. My dad came along. I took the old road pengkalan balak and sort. Alot of stops along the way. The kids get to run like crazy and the atok get to really spent time with them. This can be an annual thing for us. Last year was gunung ledang.

I spent my time reading as well and managed to finish Ayat-ayat cinta. Mantap. There are moments that I cried reading the book. Hmm I can't remember which passage. Tapi ada satu part ni funny. Masa dia kata rakan2 dia yang ngaji dengan Sheikh tu kasihan kat dia sebab dia murid kesayangan cikgu dia. Kelakar aku rasa. ACtually banyak gak funny moment. Saya tengah menteleah kali kedua ni. I like the book becaue I can feel what the writer says about the summer heat and the winter cold. I can relate to the arabic convo (especially helped by the footnoteslah of course) and it certainly remind me of the recently married couple in Qtar hari tu. The groom pun Indonesian gak. Tak taulah ramai awek rebut dia ke tak. he he mungkin harus ku tanya sama dia. And after that I sent sms to lover in Indonesian mode.

"AKu perlu bicara sama kamu"
"Sesuatu yang sirius"
"Apakah kau sudah tiba di rumahmu?"

and after that he gelabah-gelabah open the YM and asked me what happen I said
"Apa yang kamu ribut-ribut begini"

Hahahha. entah betul ke tidak.

I want to get the other malay/ Indonesia book yang femes amat tu. Tasbih something. Apa ah tajuk dia?

I managed to get one session of facial. Sakit nak mampus! Nasib baik dia kata tak banyak yang nak di korek tapi muka banyak bekas jerawat. Huhuhu.

Will

Well I am going to shop for certain things. Like I prefer buying skirts in Malaysia because I can at least find my size i.e. my length and I prefer the design here. tak gaudy. Books. Barang penjagaan muka. Tudung. he he.. rempah ratus. Nak jumpa kawan-kawan.

And I am thinking of selling our car. Mazda Premacy year 2004 Color red mengancam. SPorty look. Good condition. Accident free (So far, Insya Allah) Any takers? Email me if interested.

mengarut betul entry ni. bebel tak henti-henti.

Kenduri-kendara

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at PhotobucketMak mertua aku suka menganjurkan kenduri. Jika hajatnya tercapai : kenduri, jika dia rasa syukur : kenduri, dah lama tak kenduri : kenduri.

Mak mertua aku cuma mahukan kekecohan.

Rumah mak mertua aku dikelilingi saudara-mara belaka. Sehari sebelum kenduri penuhlah rumah mak mertua aku. Kecoh dengan persiapan kenduri. Yang lelaki melapah lembu, yang perempuan menyiapkan ramuan masakan. Timbullah cerita lawak diiringi gelak ketawa. Yang sernok pastinya jika ada yang melatah.

Anak-anak aku turut menyaksikan penyembelihan lembu. Monyok muka masing-masing, sedih gamaknya. Aku teringat masa aku kanak-kanak.

Kenduri lagi tahun depan? Mungkin juga.

Oh ya, beberapa gambar kenagan terdapat di SINI. Tetapi sesetengah gambar mungkin agak mengganggu perasaan. Teruskan dengan berhati-hati.

Picnic at Gunung Ledang, Tangkak

06:19 PM, Tuesday, August 7, 2007 .. Category : Lollies loves Malaysia .. 0 comments .. Link
Gunung Ledang used to be known as Mount Ophir.

I brought the kids there today to have a splashy cool fun day. I remembered when I was a kid, to have a picni at Gunung Ledang is really a big treat and a big thing. We didn't have a car back then. So usually when there were any rombongan or many of my dad's friend who asked us to join them, then we'd go. Going to Gunung Ledang would mean sleepless night the night before and my mum would cook her rolling eyes nasi lemak with sambal udang. I would have knots in the butterfly, too excited.

When I was a teenage I joined camping groups and camped there. I remembered going with a belia group. There were a few chinese guys from hulu mana entah who speak very little malay and some Indian girls pun dari estet mana who speak Malay quite well despite heavy accent. They were the best groups I have been with. Serious! I am not saying this afraid of my blog would be banned or something. We really learned a lot from one another. Every morning I would watch the Indian girl with her face washing routine that she claimed would keep acne away. She has clear skin. I think most of is turmeric powder. I don't know. It made her face yellow. She only eats and drink in her stainless steel plates and cups.

The chinese guys were chefs in some cruise boat. They cooked the best camping food I have ever had. I remembered they worked on some bamboos (was it?) and made us long chopstick for cooking.

I think I tried teaching them malay and sang dikir barat for our final show.

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at PhotobucketI have scaled Gunung Ledang only once all the way from Asahan to Sagil. One of the toughest mountains in Malaysia, I must say. Not that I have scaled many though. Just a few to tell tales. But I took this photo. Can you read it? ANyway it says it is the 64th highest in Malaysia and the sixth toughest mountain to climb. Too bad it didn't tell you the height of it. Google if you want.

Anyway, my kids had it easier. Now we can go to Gunung Ledang even at the spur of the moment like what we did today. The car journey which would take one hour and a half took us perhaps 40 minutes now that there are better roads, and I didn't have to cook nasi lemak. (I know OLAB did. he he). I bought KFC. (To Aliya, mesyet potete in Tangkak is quite good).

The legend about Gunung Ledang as probably some of you know is the Princess of Gunung Ledang who sometime go around as an old haggard, nenek kebayan. I heard so many stories about people meeting with them, either to face doom or to be granted with good things. When I was a young kid they told me not to use bad words here. Not to do any sinful things either...at that time it only meant no snogging. I heard countless stories of young couples dead, trees fall on their tent, lightning strikes. Basically do not tarnish this place. I don't know.

One time when I was scaling down, I met an old man. He looks so so, how shall I say it, like lights emitting from his face. There were many young men with him looking like pendekars. I remembered going down first but met them at the bottom. They got there earlier looking like they only had a 10 minutes walk, while I looked like my cheeks were drooping. They must know some very very short cuts.

Anyway, the kids had a great time. I didn't go up high though. One old man. One fidgety woman (me) three children...I think our spot was good enough. I remembered refusing to stop there when I was younger.

The water was great. Brrrrrrrrrr. The place still good. there are chalets now. People still litter.

We had a great time.

Malay Male Names

01:23 PM, Friday, June 15, 2007 .. Category : Lollies loves Malaysia .. Link
I have put up this entry before but only in modblog. Since I wrote my kids name earlier, I just thought of putting it back. Saja je for throwing ideas purpose and also for my own record keeping. This one may not be easy for non Malaysian to follow though.

I sort of notice certain "traditional" names among the malay men from the various states in Malaysia. Their names would somehow reflect which state they come from. These may not be 100% correct, as it is only a mere unacademic non intelligent observation, I made. But I believe it somehow is true for most people.

If you come from Johor, the southern state of Malaysia, you are probably name Atan, Ahmad, Majid, Wahid and Ibrahim. These names seem to be the common names for the Johorians. OK not everyone in Johor used these names, but the chances that people using these names come from Johor are quite high. 90% probability.

One example of Ibrahim is Tengku Ibrahim of the Johor royalty.

Melaka people favourite choices are Ghaffar, Baba, Hamzah, Dol, Mat and Basri. Famous people dotting this name are Arwah Tun Ghaffar Baba the politician and Hamzah Dolmat the Dondang Sayang guy.

Melaka and Muar are only one hour drive on the modern day driving, so Muarians and Malaccans share these names too.

Now, let's go to the land of masak lemak cili api, the most outstanding name would be Rais. Heard of Rais Yatim and Hishammudin Rais? Try and guess where they are from.

I am not familiar with names from Selangor, so we are going to skip that and go to Perak.

Probably the most typical names for Perakians would be Meor, Ayub, Yeop and Lope. Does this ring something “Kejo! Yeop kejo!” Also people with Megats generally come from Perak too.

Now there are many Habibs in Penang and Syeds too. So imagine Nasi Kandar and gold smith. Other favourite names are Nagore, Hashim and Ahmed. Anybody from Penang to confirm?

Kelantan people seem to like the name Mohamed and Mustapha, so I notice, and thus Mustapha Muhammad the politician.

Do you have friends with names like Jusoh, Ngah, Embong, Mamat, Awang and Shafie? If you do, they are probably from Trengganu or Pahang. Kelantan and Trengganu may have the same taste for the names as well. Awang is also a favourite name in Kelantan. This is not surprising for Kelantan, Trengganu and Pahang are all on the east coast.

My grandfather’s name is Ngah and he was from Pahang. But my great grandfather’s name is Buang. Hmm..he was a Bugis. I can’t deduce anything there though.

Hah! The Malaysian Javanese also has certain name trends. The one that I encountered most are Zaki. OK, you can also be called Zaki but not a Javanese but it’s OK you are still a Malaysian. We tend to take each other's culture names. The Jawa also like prefix of Mas, like Masri, Maslina. Notice it is Maslina not Mzlina. Mazlina is not a Jawa name. Enggak gitu, Kang Mas? And many end their name with Man like Suratman, Saniman and. Sudirman. Not Superman though. That is American.

I have a friend whose father’s name is Gampang. I am yet to ask him where he is from. I think he is a Jawa. Even though gampang has a bad connotation in our culture but gampang really mans easy. His father may be quite an easy baby in his mummy's tummy. But tough for my friend for he is in Malaysia and he remains as anak gampang.

So, maybe you do notice that some of the names here are people you know and they come from other different states. This is not surprising since these are all Malay names anyway. Let’s say you meet a Majid, who I pointed out is a Johorian, but he tells you that he is from Selangor or KL now (everyone is in KL now), maybe his parents are from Johor or his great grandparents or his great, great grandparents. Oh! Well you catch my drift don’t you?

OK some of the names are common like Mohammad..nearly half of the Malay male population don the name Mohammad, but usually people in Kelantan will use only Mohammad or Mohammed and not combine it with other names. And also the name Jusoh, I really don't know that there are Jusohs in Johore unless their heritage does come from the Eastern Coast.

However some of these names are losing out. The modern generation, including me, tend to choose names for their kids, with a more “meaningful” meaning from the Quran, say, and glamourise it with a tint of western taste.

So, what do you think? What is your name? Do comment because I like to note down other view on cultures.
